Jimmy Cordero, a pitcher for the New York Yankees, has been suspended for the rest of the season by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred due to a violation of the sport’s domestic violence policy. Cordero accepted the suspension and will miss the remaining 76 games of the season and the postseason. As a result, he will lose $309,677 in pay.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that he found out about the suspension the night before and stated that Cordero had informed him a few days earlier about an ongoing investigation. Boone expressed his sympathy for everyone involved, but he also mentioned that he did not have any details about what happened, as investigations and the policy are designed to operate in that manner.

Cordero had a record of 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in one start and 30 relief appearances this season. He was earning the major league minimum salary of $720,000. In 2021, Cordero missed the season due to Tommy John surgery while with the Chicago White Sox organization. He spent the 2022 season with the Yankees’ Triple-A team in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The New York Yankees released a statement expressing their support for MLB’s discipline and stating that there is no justification for domestic violence.

It is worth noting that another Yankees pitcher, Domingo Germán, had previously received an 81-game suspension under the domestic violence policy, which he served in 2019 and 2020. Germán recently pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history.

Aaron Boone mentioned that the Yankees became aware of a possible MLB investigation involving Cordero within the past week. He also stated that Cordero began discussing the situation with his teammates after Tuesday’s game, and the team held a meeting to address the issue.

Boone emphasized that the priority in this situation is to hope for healing, growth, and maturity. He acknowledged that this is a serious matter that carries a significant consequence, and he expressed his support for the disciplinary action taken by MLB. Boone also highlighted that this situation goes beyond baseball and represents a real-life issue.

Jimmy Cordero, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 245 pounds, has played in 114 major league games, including one start, over four seasons with the Nationals, Blue Jays, White Sox, and Yankees. He has a career record of 6-7 with a 4.36 ERA. His most recent outing was on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, during which he allowed three runs and five hits in two innings.
