Trenton entered just six wrestlers in a dual tournament at Cameron High School on Saturday. Four of the six wrestlers returned home with winning records from the event.
At 170 pounds, Kaden Owen was undefeated in five matches. He collected four pins and an 18-4 major decision. Sam Gibson had four pins and a forfeit victory at 182 and 195 pounds.
Hunter McAtee, wrestling at 113 pounds, was 3-1 in actual competition while also collecting a forfeit victory. THS Head Coach Charlie Bacon praised McAtee’s tenacity for battling through painful leg cramps throughout the day successfully.
Coleman Griffin, in the 152 pounds weight class, had a 3-1 in actual competition, while adding a victory via the forfeit route.
With just six wrestlers among the 14 weight classes, Trenton, as a team, had just one victory and four losses in dual competition. That victory came against the Plattsburg Tigers by a score of 36-18, in an encounter that saw only two matches going to the mat and avoiding forfeit.
Trenton’s losses were to Chillicothe 54-19, Savannah 58-22, Cameron 63-13, and Clinton 36-24.
Coach Bacon said he thought the Bulldogs had a strong tournament showing, considering how much COVID-19 protocols had chopped into the normally deep and talented Trenton roster during the week:
In Chillicothe’s 54-19 head-to-head win over Trenton, Hunter McAtee of the Bulldogs grabbed an 8-7 decision over Sheldon Rader at 113 pounds. Coleman Griffin took a 10-0 major decision over Cayden Larson at 152. Chillicothe’s Brody Carins pinned Trenton’s Gaven Kelsall at 160, with Trenton’s Kaden Owen pinning Dawson Sutton at 3:56 in the 170 pound match. Sam Gibson pinned Brock Miller of Chillicothe at 2:57 at 182 pounds, while at 195, Lucas Reynolds of the Hornets pinned Nate Burkeybile of the Bulldogs.
Chillicothe defeated Mexico 40-38, Marceline 48-31, Clinton 57-21, and Sullivan 50-27 at Saturday’s Crossroads Invitational in Cameron.
