The Winston Redbirds boys basketball team has lost significant pieces off of state tournament qualifying and district championship teams over the past couple of years, and while to some the ‘Birds look more vulnerable to HDC Conference rivals, WHS still poses a strong challenge to those with dreams of finishing at the top of conference standings.
Case in point was Tuesday night in Galt, where the Grundy R-5 Panthers welcomed in Winston, hoping to swing an upset that would push Steve Wells’ Panther team toward the top of the HDC. A statement was made in the boys game, but it went decisively to the Redbirds, as Jacob Lewis scored 23 points and Cy Uthe 22, with suffocating defense leading Winston to a 61-24 win. Â
The news in the opener was much better for Panther fans, as the Grundy girls bounced back strongly from Thursday’s tough loss at Green City, beating Winston 67-43. Morgan Axtell had 17 points, Mady Williams 15, Anna Milazzo 13, and Jandy Peterson 11 points for Grundy R-5.
