The Trenton Bulldogs hopes of handing the Milan Wildcats their first loss of the 2018 football season appeared to have life at halftime of Friday night’s game at C.F. Russell, with a pair of Mark Trump touchdown runs cutting Milan’s lead to 25-22. However, in a game where halftime adjustments played a definitive key, the ‘Cats shutout Trenton’s offense in the second half, with Dre Morehead adding two touchdowns to the two scored in the first half, as the Wildcats stormed to 6-0 on the season, and 4-0 in the Grand River Conference, with a 43-22 victory.
Trenton opened the scoring with a 53 yard strike from Sam Schilling to Jaren Whitney just 2 minutes and 14 seconds into the first quarter, with the extra point leaving the score at 7-0. Milan answered on a 50 yard seam pass from Ryan Dabney to Hunter Shaw, tying the score just 2 minutes and 12 seconds later.
The visitors from Sullivan County took control of the game late in the opening quarter, as a 36 yard pass to Morehead and a two yard scoring run by Jamuel Pagan pushed the lead to 19-7.
Trenton closed the advantage to 19-14 on a three run touchdown run by Trump early in the second quarter, with Milan answering on a 2 yard Morehead run midway through the quarter. A five yard Trump scoring run (combined with a Schilling two-point conversion run), and a Bulldog defensive stop at the 32 yard line with six seconds remaining, left the halftime score at 25-22.
The second half scoring came on a third quarter pass of 10 yards from Dabney to Morehead (late third quarter), an 11 yard run by Morehead (mid-4th quarter), and a 1 yard run by Pagan with 20 seconds left in the contest.
The loss drops Trenton’s record to 1-5 overall, and 1-3 in the GRC. Unofficially, Pagan led Milan’s rushing attack with 24 carries for 136 yards, with Dominic Dabney adding 12 carries for 86 yards. For the Bulldogs, Trump had 23 carries for 108 yards, with Carson Radcliff 12 carries for 49 yards.
Milan, with the victory, is tied with Gallatin for the GRC lead, both at 4-0. Gallatin beat South Harrison on Friday night, 23-22. Both South Harrison and Princeton sit at 3-1, one game off the pace. Princeton, in action heard on KTTN-FM on Friday night, beat Putnam County 48-14. Maysville picked up their first win of the season, 24-18 over the Polo Panthers.
