Carson Beck has been named the starting quarterback for the No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs as they begin their pursuit of a third consecutive national championship. The decision was announced by Coach Kirby Smart and comes as no surprise, given Beck’s position as the top backup quarterback in the previous season and his performance during spring practice.

Beck, a junior, was the favored candidate entering preseason practice, competing against quarterbacks Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton. His experience gave him an advantage in understanding the team’s offensive system.

While Beck has secured the starting role, the competition for the backup position is still open. Smart mentioned that the other quarterbacks, Vandagriff and Stockton, have shown considerable improvement during training camp and will continue to compete for the backup spot.

Beck’s challenge will be to follow in the footsteps of Stetson Bennett, who was a key player in Georgia’s back-to-back national championship wins and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy last year. The new offensive coordinator, Mike Bobo, is expected to bring his expertise to the team’s offense after previously assisting Todd Monken.

Smart indicated that Vandagriff and Stockton will also receive playing time to assess their readiness for the backup role in the coming weeks. The Bulldogs’ quest for a third straight national championship will begin with Beck leading the way under center.
