Trenton High School sophomore Mark Trump scored on runs of 32 and 45 yards in the fourth quarter on Tuesday night, turning a six point Lathrop lead into an eight point Bulldog advantage, in a 28-26 JV football final at C.F. Russell Stadium, in a game that ended at the 1 yard line, with the Mules unable to send the game to overtime, stopped on a two-point conversion attempt. Lathrop scored a touchdown as time expired to earn the “un-timed” two-point conversion try.
Lathrop scored first, with a scoring run and two-point conversion giving the visitors an early 8-0 lead, but THS cut the lead to 8-6 after one quarter, as Sam Schilling scored on a 58 yard jaunt.
Lathrop pushed the lead to 14-6, scoring first in the second quarter on a touchdown run, but the Bulldogs tied the score at 14 going into the half, with Isaac Harris scoring from 24 yards out, with the two-point conversion successful.
A passing score by Lathrop made the score 20-14 after three quarters, setting the stage for Trump’s final quarter heroics.
The game, originally scheduled for Monday night, was moved to Tuesday at the request of Lathrop officials, wary of traveling out of town in the heavy traffic brought into the area by Monday’s solar eclipse.
