Trenton High School’s Werthen Gass shot a 96 at Monday’s Class 1, Section 3 golf tournament, earning a spot in next week’s Class 1 state meet at Meadowlake Acres in New Bloomfield, Missouri.
Gass’ 96, at the Kirksville Country Club, was good for a 10th place tie. Â Trenton, as a team, shot 435, good for 5th place. Â Sectional champion Macon (397) and runner-up Gallatin (399) qualified their entire teams to participate in state. Â Brookfield, finishing third with a mark of 403, just missed out on the automatic qualifier. Â Mexico was fourth (406) and Salisbury sixth (491) in the tournament.
Macon’s Paige Hawkins earned medalist honors with 86, while Hamilton’s Samantha Cornelius tied with Moberly’s Anna Lewis for runner-up, both at 91. Â Brookfield had two golfers in the top 10, as Emily Vogel tied for 4th with 92, and Mallory Gonzalez with 7th at 94. Â
Other state qualifiers from the area include South Harrison’s Kylie Gannan, 12th place with 97, Brookfield’s Julia Weydert also at 97, Taylor Rardon of Gallatin tied for 14th at 98, Gallatin’s Megan Cox at 99, Chillicothe’s Alexis Hargrave at 100, with Gallatin’s Kaitlyn Bird and Kelli Lynch at 101. Â
Gallatin’s Taylor Sloan shot 103, just missing the cut, but she will get the push-through to state with the runner-up finish of the Lady Bulldogs. Â Finishing just short of qualifying for state from the Trenton Lady Bulldogs were Lana Raymo (112 / 31st place), Kaitlyn Mounce (113 / 32nd place), and Hannah Kennebeck (114 / 33rd place).
Addison Cornett of Hamilton shot 118, and Chillicothe’s Riley Brobst 125 at the Section 3 meet in Kirksville.
Pembroke Hill (345) and Smithville (384) had the top two team scores at Class 1, Section 4 golf in Smithville on Monday, advancing the Lady Raiders and Lady Warriors to state. Â India Gaume of Pembroke Hill, with a round of 79, was individual medalist, putting up the only score of the day under 80. Â Olivia Law of King City barely made the state meet, shooting 100 at sectionals, just good enough for a tie for 19th place, avoiding the “cut line” by one stroke.
