For three quarters of Thursday night’s boys basketball contest between the Chillicothe Hornets and Trenton Bulldogs, the hosts from THS had trouble scoring, but stayed right in the game by playing stout defense, and strong rebounding, to frustrate the offensive firepower brought north by the MEC’s Hornets.
Chillicothe led 7-6 after one quarter, but, led by a pair of perimeter jumpers in the second quarter by sophomore Carson Burchett, the Bulldogs rallied to lead at the half 13-11. The lead see-sawed back to the Hornets by the end of the third, 24-22, but it was the final quarter that paved the way to Chillicothe’s road win, as CHS blew out Trenton 18-4, for the 42-26 win.
Chillicothe, now 4-1 on the young season, was led by Adler Marshall with 12 points and Westley Brandsgaard with 11. Trenton, dropping to the break-even mark at 3-3, had 8 points from Dylan Harris, with Lathan Croy, Hunter Dugan, and Carson Burchett all scoring six.
Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin was frustrated at his team’s offensive struggles throughout the night, but praised the defensive intensity that the Bulldogs brought into an intense, rivalry game:
Chillicothe Head Coach Tim Cool also praised Trenton’s defensive work, noting how hard it was for the Hornets to find offensive rhythm before the final quarter:
The Hornet boys will play at Excelsior Springs on Monday and Macon on Tuesday of next week, while the Bulldog boys host Princeton on Tuesday night, on KTTN FM 92.3 and KTTNSports.com.
