Trenton’s Gass shoots 102, Hamilton’s Cornelius in 15th place, after first day of Class 1 state golf meet

Trenton High School’s Werthen Gass is headed into the final day of the girl’s golf season looking to improve from an opening round score of 102 at the Class 1 state golf tournament in New Bloomfield, Missouri.

Gass, the only Trenton golfer in the field, sits in 65th place after Day #1, 39 strokes behind the 73 from event leader Sarah Bell of Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau).  Notre Dame leads the Class 1 team chase halfway through the tournament, shooting 324 on Monday, well ahead of second place Pembroke Hill (348).  John Burroughs is in third place at 349.  Macon is fifth at 391 and Gallatin seventh at 408.  Other teams in the Class 1 field are Greenwood, Smithville, and Purdy.

For Gallatin, the top score from the five Lady Bulldogs on the course was from Kaitlyn Bird, with a 93 good for 30th place.  Megan Cox shot 98, Kelli Lynch 108, Taylor Sloan 109, and Taylor Rardon 113 for GHS.

The top area score was turned in by Samantha Cornelius of Hamilton, with an 85 good for a 15th place tie, just 12 strokes behind the leader.  King City’s Olivia Law, the Grand River Conference girl’s golf champion, shot 101 on Monday, for 61st place.  Kylie Gannon of South Harrison shot 94 for 37th place, while Allison Marticke of Stanberry, with a 96, sits in 45th place.  Chillicothe has one golfer in the Class 1 tournament, as Lexi Hargrave shot a 121 on Monday representing the Lady Hornets.

Class 2 girl’s golf is being held in Columbia, where St. Joseph’s Academy (338) has the team lead at the halfway point.  MICDS is second (342) and Rock Bridge third (345).  Claire Solovic of Seckman, with an opening round score of 71, has a four-stroke lead on Shannon Gould of MICDS and Samantha Paulak of Park Hill through Day #1.
