The Trenton Bulldogs opened the 2017 tennis season with a trip to St. Joseph on Thursday afternoon, playing the unbeaten Bishop LeBlond Golden Eagles. Despite individual victories from Jacob Davis and Kade Ockenfels, the Bulldogs fell by a final of 7-2 in varsity competition, while the Eagles took 2 of 3 doubles duels against the Bulldogs in JV play.
At #2 singles, Trenton’s Davis claimed an 8-4 win over LeBlond’s Teddy Sommers. Trenton’s other varsity win, at #3 singles, was an 8-1 rout for Ockenfels over Andy Burns.
LeBlond’s varsity wins were John Lierz, at #1 singles by a score of 8-2 over Nick Shields; Sean Davis, at #4 singles, 8-2 over Wyatt Neal; Gian Lombardino, at #5 singles, beating Gabe Swann 8-4; and #6 singles player Nic Schultz, in an 8-4 decision over Creed Houghton.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs were competitive, but went 0-3, as Shields and Davis lost 8-6 to Lierz and Sommers; Burns and Lombardino beat Ockenfels and Houghton 8-4; and Davis and Schultz downed Neal and Swann 8-6.
Bishop LeBlond is now 4-o in varsity play.
Trenton’s #1 JV doubles team of Weston Otto and Jeremy Elliott won 7-6, but the teams of Colton Hamilton and Elijah Oyler, along with Reece Miller and Riley Raymo, fell by identical 6-2 final scores.
