The Trenton Bulldogs, just two years removed from a winless season, continue to be one of the top stories in the 2022 high school football season, now 7-0 with a dominant defensive performance at the Cemetery Bowl in Maysville setting the pace for a 34-0 victory over the Wolverines on Saturday afternoon, heard on Hot Country KGOZ 101.7 FM.
Maysville received the opening kickoff under bright sunny skies and seasonably cool temperatures, but found difficulties on the second play from scrimmage, as a pitch was dropped by the running back, springing an opportunity for the Bulldogs defense, with Trenton latching onto the turnover. Two plays into the ensuing drive, senior fullback Sam Gibson had his longest run of the day:Â
When able to control field position, the Wolverine defense played the Bulldogs run-heavy offense stoutly, however, Trenton, as has been the Bulldogs style in the unbeaten start to the ’22 season, added to the first-quarter advantage, as senior quarterback Coleman Griffin called his own number on a 4th and short from the Maysville 40:Â
A Gabe Novak two-point conversion surged the lead to 14-0, before a 14 yard scamper by Gibson within the final minute of the half send Trenton to a 20-0 halftime lead.
With Trenton’s defense looking impenetrable for Maysville, the Wolverine defense continued to make life tough on the Bulldogs running game, holding Gibson, Griffin, and Novak in check throughout the third. With 3:20 remaining in the quarter, offensive coordinator Wes Croy looked to pass the ball to an emerging sophomore receiving threat to extend the lead:Â
With Trenton’s defense finishing the job for the shutout in the fourth quarter, Gabe Novak scored on an 8 yard jet sweep to the southeast corner of the bowl for the Bulldogs, with Gibson’s PAT finishing the scoring with 2:43 to go. The loss for Maysville drops the Wolverines to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Grand River Conference play, tied with Putnam County for third place, as the Midgets fell to the unbeaten Gallatin Bulldogs on Friday night, 35-20, sending Gallatin to Trenton on Friday night, October 14th for a Week 8 unbeaten showdown at C.F. Russell Stadium, with simulcast coverage on KTTN FM 92.3 and Hot Country Z 101.7 starting at 6 o’clock with “Football Frenzy”.
Maysville’s defense held Trenton below its normally lofty rushing totals, with Gibson gaining an unofficial 62 yards on 20 carries, Novak 13 carries for 67 yards, and Griffin 12 carries for 89 yards. For Maysville, Spencer Pliley had 14 carries for just 31 yards.
The win keeps Trenton in fourth place in the Class 2, District 8 standings, with 47.52 points trailing Macon’s 50.14, Higginsville’s 50.21, and first place Richmond’s 50.43. Macon, sitting in third place, has a particularly tough ending stretch to the regular season, battling Class 1 #1 ranked Monroe City for Week 8 and Class 2 #9 ranked Centralia for Week 9.
