The Trenton Lady Bulldogs, behind a dominant first half performance and a career high 18 points from senior forward Kaegan Croy, held off a hard-charging East Buchanan squad on Tuesday night, winning the girls basketball season opener at THS by a score of 54-48.Â
THS started fast, with an 18-6 advantage in the first quarter and a 14-8 bulge in the second quarter giving the home team a 18 point halftime lead.Â
However, East Buchanan outscored the Lady Bulldogs by a 20-10 margin in the third quarter, and although never grabbing the lead in the fourth quarter, the visitors got to as close as three points in the final two minutes of regulation. Here is winning head coach Steve Richman talking about the “Battle of Two Halves”: Â
Senior guard Mirena King scored 17 points for Trenton, with Kimberly Clark adding eight, Kaylor Hodge six, and Astrid Soriano five points.Â
For East Buchanan, Piper Jacobs had 17 points, with 13 of those after halftime. Layla Guthals had 11 points and Kourtney Keling 10.Â
The boys game went to a deep and talented East Buchanan squad that used a full-court press to rattle a forward-heavy Trenton side. Out of 12 East Buchanan players on the roster, all got playing time and 10 scored, led by Clark Scott’s 14 points. Landon Smith and Ben Rhoad both had 10 points.Â
Trenton had 22 of its 35 points scored by senior forward Kiefer Tolson, with a three-point shot, eight two-point shots, and 3 for 3 free throw accuracy. Hunter Smith had six points with Elijah Miller scoring four and Isaac Dixon three.Â
Looking forward, East Buchanan will play the Cameron Dragons on Tuesday night in the home opening doubleheader in Gower, while Trenton will be in the Gallatin Tournament next week, with the #1 seeded Lady Bulldogs playing North Harrison on Monday afternoon at 4:30 (on KGOZ FM 101.7), with the Trenton boys, seeded fifth, playing Polo in quarterfinal action on Tuesday at 5:45 PM (on KGOZ FM 101.7).Â
