The Trenton Lady Bulldogs amassed 22 1/2 points, good for an 11th place finish, in Saturday’s Class 3, Section 4 track and field meet at Richmond High School. Advancing to the state meet in Jefferson City this coming weekend, with top four sectional finishes, were Salem Croy and Sydney Lynch in the javelin, Mason Hooyman in the pole vault, and the 4 by 400 relay team of Hooyman, Thelma Guerrero, Shayla Woodside, and Tenna Roberts.
The Clinton girls won the sectional championship with 81 points, with Lincoln Prep second (78 points) and Chillicothe third (73 points). Lawson was fourth and Cameron in 14th place.
The Trenton boys racked up 16 points in a 13th place finish. Lamar won the Section 4 boys title with 91 points, edging runner-up Chillicothe’s 85 points. Clinton was in third place. Maryville was sixth (57 points) and Cameron (10 points) in 17th place.
Lawson senior Nikki Smith dominated the sprint races, winning the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes. Cameron freshman Khayla Hollingsworth was third in the 400 meter dash.
Chillicothe’s Whitney Clampitt was the champion in the 800 meter run. Cameron’s Hannah Robinson was fifth, with Lawson’s Taylor Dolt and Mackenzi Stephan in 6th and 7th places, respectively.
In the 1600 meter run, Stephan was 7th and Chillicothe’s Carly Beebe in 8th place. Ayat Youssef of Chillicothe was 5th place in the 3200 meter run, with Lawson’s Emily Dahlor in 8th place.
Jaime Albertson of Chillicothe qualified for the state meet in both hurdles events, winning the 100 meters (Cameron’s Morgan Choate was second) and finishing third in the 300 meters. Kylee Larson of Chillicothe was 8th in the 100 meter hurdles, with Claire Chapman fifth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Lawson was 8th in the 4 by 100 meter relay. Lawson was 7th and Trenton (Thelma Guerrero, Mason Hooyman, Abbie Shuler, Tenna Roberts) 8th in the 4 by 200 relay. Lawson won the final event of the day, as Nikki Smith passed Whitney Clampitt of Chillicothe on the final lap of the 4 by 400 relay. The Lady Hornets finished second, with Trenton’s team of Guerrero, Shayla Woodside, Roberts, and Hooyman running 4:15.30 to finish third and advance to state.
Lawson was fifth and Trenton (Tenna Roberts, Hannah Mehrhoff, Abbie Shuler, Jessica Westcott) 7th in the 4 by 800 relay. Chillicothe’s 4 by 800 team suffered a disqualification in that event.
Whitney Clampitt of Chillicothe was champion in the high jump, with Lawson’s Claire Holles in third. Chillicothe’s Ashley Askvig was fifth. In tyhe pole vault, Mason Hooyman finished in third place for Trenton High School, advancing to state with a 8 foot, 6 inch vault. Molly Jones of Chillicothe was fifth, and Maycie Mayfield of Trenton tied for 6th.
Shayla Woodside of Trenton finished eighth in the long jump. Chillicothe’s Whitney Clampitt was runner-up in the triple jump. Trenton’s Ally Ockenfels completed her Lady Bulldogs shot put career with a sixth place finish at Richmond. Margo Young of Chillicothe was 7th and Trenton’s Salem Croy 8th in the discus.
One of the superb individual efforts of Saturday came in the boy’s sprints, as Knob Noster’s Andrew Williams swept the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes. Chillicothe’s Mason Hayward was 7th in the 200 dash. Cameron’s Tristan Michaelis was 7th in the 800 meter run. Layne Worman of Chillicothe competed in the distance races, finishing 6th in the 1600 and 7th in the 3200 runs. Both of those races were won by future Army Black Knight Evan Peterson of Pembroke Hill.
Brett Shaffer of Chillicothe will represent the Hornets in both Class 3 hurdles races at state, finishing 4th in the 110 and 3rd in the 300. Zach Holland of Chillicothe, struggling with a leg injury throughout the day, gutted out an 8th place finish, and earned one point for the Hornet team, in the 300 hurdles.
Trenton’s boys just missed out on a state berth in the 4 by 100 relay, as Travis Leeper, Jonathan Lamp, Wyatt Whittle, and Trey Shields finishing 5th at 45.02 seconds, 0.46 seconds behind 4th place Lamar. Chillicothe was fifth in the 4 by 200 relay and 6th in the 4 by 400 relay. Chillicothe settled for 8th place in the 4 by 800 relay.
Chillicothe’s Jesse Miller won the sectional high jump at 6 feet, 8 inches, with his teammate, Peyton Forck, finishing 8th. Kyle Ross of Chillicothe won the pole vault title, with Bradley Mosier of the Hornets in 4th place to earn a Jefferson City trip. Miller backed up his high jump win with a third place finish in the long jump. Trenton had two of eight long jumpers in Saturday’s competition, with Austin Burkeybile finishing 6th and Travis Leeper in 7th place.
Chillicothe finished 5th and 8th in the triple jump, with Miller and Jon Burk holding those spots. Ian Smith of Chillicothe was 4th, Jadan Whitney of Trenton 5th, and Walker Graves of Chillicothe 6th in the shot put. Graves advances to state in the discus, with a 4th place finish. Tyler Garcia of Chillicothe was 5th and Whitney of Trenton 6th.
