Despite two losses over the past month, both to Class 4 competition, the Trenton Lady Bulldog basketball team has continued its slow rise in the Class 3 Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) high school basketball poll, moving up to #8 in the first rankings of 2017, released on Thursday morning.
Trenton, going into a home date with Maysville on Friday night, and next week’s Lawson Tournament, sits at 8-2, and the top ranked Class 3 girls squad in northwest Missouri. Â Defending state champion Strafford is top-ranked in Class 3, followed by fellow unbeaten teams Southern Boone and St. James. Â The Monroe City Lady Panthers, from the Clarence Cannon Conference, are 10-0 and ranked one slot ahead of Trenton at #7. Â California High School is ranked #9 with Licking at #10.
The Chillicothe Lady Hornets have dropped from #3 to #5 in the Class 4 girls poll, that the result of the first loss of the season for CHS, suffered at Class 5 #3 ranked Columbia Hickman over the Christmas Break. Â Chillicothe remains the top ranked girls team in northwest Missouri in Class 3, trailed by defending state champion St. Joseph Benton, who checks in at #7. Â The Smithville Lady Warrior squad that beat Trenton by a 41-36 final at NCMC Holiday Hoops is just outside the Class 4 “Top 10”.
Jefferson has moved to the top of Class 1, as the Lady Eagles received the #1 ranking this week, although that stay may be short-lived after South Nodaway won at Jefferson on Thursday night. Â North Mercer holds steady at #3, after a loss to St. Joseph Central, a win over Summit Christian Academy, and a win over #10 ranked Southwest Livingston over the past 2 1/2 weeks. Â Mercer plays at Newtown-Harris on Friday night.
Norborne is ranked #8, Mound City #5, South Nodaway #9, and Southwest Livingston #10 in the Class 1 MBCA girls poll.
In the MBCA boys poll, area highlights are Winston staying at #2 in Class 1 (behind 12-0 Walnut Grove), with Glasgow at #3, North Andrew at 4, Braymer 8, and Jefferson 9.
Stanberry’s unbeaten start brought the Bulldogs to the top spot in Class 2, however, the Bulldogs suffered a rare regular season loss, falling at Worth County on Tuesday night. Â
