The Trenton Bulldogs, stinging from a loss to Cameron on Friday afternoon in the consolation semifinals of the Chillicothe Tournament, got another shot at the Dragons on Monday night, this time on the Dragons home turf in Cameron.
Trenton, unlike Friday, came out of the shoot early on Monday, with four runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the 2nd giving starting pitcher Cole Schilling a 6-0 lead. Schilling did give up two runs in the bottom of the 3rd, as Cameron cut the lead to 6-2, but left after 3 frames having given up two runs (both earned) in two hits with three walks and a strikeout.
The middle innings stayed relatively quiet before the fifth, when THS plated an insurance run to take a 7-2 lead, only to have the Dragons rally for two runs against Bulldog reliever Hunter Dugan, to leave the score at 7-4. A Trenton three-run uprising in the top of the 6th inning, off of Cameron relief pitcher Roach, gave the ‘Dawgs a seemingly comfortable 10-4 lead.
That comfortability disappeared in the bottom of the 7th inning, with Jesse Farmer called upon to get three outs and clinch the win, instead allowing a hit and a walk, with the hit being a Cameron home run, with Farmer giving up three runs and a walk without retiring a batter, as Coach Andy Hight went to Avery Cooksey. Â
Cooksey walked two batters and allowed a run, but, with the help of two strikeouts, escaped the jam with two runs to spare, as the Bulldogs left town with the 10-8 win.
Dugan was 3 for 4 for the Bulldogs with two runs scored, while Quincy Griffin was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored. Jaren Whitney had three hits in four at-bats, driving in three runs, while Cole Schilling drove in three and scored twice.
The Trenton junior varsity played well, but came up a run short in a 5-4 final at Cameron.
The Bulldogs play a Grand River Conference opponent tonight (Tuesday night) at 5 o’clock, traveling east to Milan to battle the Wildcats. The game can be heard on KTTN FM 92.3, with Dennis Stephenson on the play-by-play call.
