The Trenton Bulldogs got two touchdown runs from senior fullback Austin Burkeybile, and an interception return for a touchdown by junior defensive tackle Mason Owen, in a 32-14 victory over the Putnam County Midgets, broadcast Friday night from C.F. Russell Stadium on Hot Country Z 101.7 and KGOZ-TV.

Trenton, during a touchdown drive midway through the first quarter, was the beneficiary of a superb diving catch on fourth down by split end Colton Colston:

Burkeybile, a handful of plays later, burst into the end zone from 5 yards out, leaving the score 6-0 after one quarter.  Trenton extended the lead with 5:17 left in the first half, with Colston again involved in the passing game:

Trailing 12-0 going into the third quarter, Putnam County needed a score to put pressure on the host Bulldogs, and got those points on a 16 yard scoring strike, on 4th and goal, from Calvin Heidenwith to Grant Sands midway through the quarter.  On the very next offensive possession for the Bulldogs, Burkeybile restored the two-score lead:

The defensive score by Owen, with 2:31 remaining in the third quarter, made the score Trenton 26-6 after three stanzas.  The teams traded touchdowns in the final quarter, with Tanner Bondy scoring on a three yard run for the Midgets, with Levi Fowler catching a 13-yard pass for the 2 point conversion.  Spencer Harris closed the scoring with a three yard touchdown run for THS with 2:58 left.  The extra point failed.

Lathan Croy had 129 yards passing on his finest night quarterbacking the Bulldogs.  Burkeybile had an unofficial total of 127 yards rushing for Trenton, with Putnam County workhorse back Carson Quint finishing with 86 yards.

The Midgets, now 0-3 overall, and 0-1 in the GRC, will host the Milan Wildcats next Friday on KTTN FM 92.3.  The Bulldogs, 1-2 overall, and 1-0 in the GRC, travel to Princeton to tangle with the Tigers next week.

Trenton Head Coach Brandon Boswell was proud of the way his team, dealing with injuries at key positions, fought through adversity on Friday night:

Trenton’s next home game will be Homecoming, on Friday, September 16th, against the Milan Wildcats on KTTN FM 92.3.
