For one quarter, it looked like the upstart East Buchanan Lady Bulldog program might be able to challenge, and potentially upset, the #2 ranked Trenton Lady Bulldogs in the THS season opener, Tuesday night in Gower.
However, that ‘home team hope’ dissolved quickly in a dazzling display of defense, quality shot making, and overwhelming team depth by the defending Grand River Conference champions from Trenton. In the second quarter, THS blitzed the hosts, going on a 19-6 run, led by 7 points in the quarter (13 in the half) by Ainsley Tolson, as superb defense and superior ball movement led to a 31-17 halftime lead, and a 47-21 lead after 3, in a season opening 61-28 victory.
Freshman Maci Moore, in her first game on the Trenton varsity, showed confidence and poise in the paint, in scoring a game-high 18 points for Trenton. Ainsley Tolson added 16 points, while Sidney Lynch, teaming with Moore on several nice passing plays inside the paint, added 11. East Buchanan, falling to 0-2 on the season, had 12 points from Samantha White.
Trenton Head Coach Brian Upton said the night was not perfect, but had much more good than bad for his squad:
Coach Upton credited the noticeably quicker ball movement and offensive productivity for practice work and familiarity with his system:
Trenton’s returning All-State guard Ainsley Tolson had three made 3-pointers in the first half, when the game remained very much in doubt:
The Trenton girls will next be in action on Tuesday, November 28th, playing the Winston Lady Redbirds in a quarterfinal game from the Gallatin Invitational Tournament. The game tips at 4:30. Trenton has the #1 seed for the annual GIT at Gallatin High School.
