Lafayette High School in St. Joseph hosted the Irish Relays on Thursday afternoon, as 12 schools sent their girls and boys track teams to the north side of St. Joseph, with the Trenton Lady Bulldogs (131 1/2 points) and Chillicothe Hornets (126 points) taking the team championships.

Among individual results, Trenton’s sprinting duo of Kristi Ewing and Lexi Whitaker had another strong showing. Ewing finished second (by 0.01 seconds) to Benton’s Lynzi Miler in the 100 dash, but won the 400 run, with a time of 1:01.41. Whitaker finished second in the 400 to her teammate, and won the 200 meter dash, beating Miller to the line by 0.1 seconds (26.16 to 26.26).
THS Junior Salem Croy won the javelin throw, with an effort of 120 feet, with Trenton’s Sidney Lynch second. Freshman Maci Moore finished second in the shot put for Trenton.
The Lady Bulldogs won 2 of the 4 relay races, with Ewing and Whitaker combining with Mykah Hurley and Lexi Gott to win the 4 by 200 in a time of 1:50.23. Trenton took the 4 by 400 race, with Ewing, McKayla Blackburn, Gott, and Whitaker putting up a winning time of 4:17.01. Trenton and Chillicothe tied for second in the 4 by 800 relay, more than 28 seconds off the winning time of Lawson. Lawson’s girls also won the 4 by 100 relay.
Among Chillicothe’s first-place finishers in an outstanding day for the Hornet boys was senior Walker Graves, taking the discus (157’4″) and shot put (54’9″) titles. Trenton’s duo of Jadan Whitney and Carson Burchett finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put behind Graves. Chillicothe’s Jon Burk was third in the high jump, while Graves, a future Northwest Bearcat, showed his all-around athletic ability, with a second-pace mark in the javelin toss.
Chillicothe’s Brett Shaffer and Trenton’s Brian Ewing finished first and second in the 200 dash, separated by 0.45 seconds (22.1 for Shaffer, 22.55 for Ewing). Isaak Rasche of Chillicothe was second and Ewing of Trenton third in the 400 race. Ethan Corbin of the Hornets took third in the 800, and William Perry of CHS third in the 1600, while Logan Asher of Chillicothe was third in the 3200.
Shaffer dominated the hurdles races for Chillicothe, winning both the 110 hurdles (14.75) and 300 hurdles (39.57) races. Matthew Sibbit of Trenton was second in the 300 hurdles, 3.98 seconds behind Shaffer’s blistering time.
The Chillicothe 4 by 400 relay team, made up of Mullikin, Anderson, Rasche, and Shaffer, were victorious, in a time of 3:31.17.Â
