The Trenton Lady Bulldogs continued to build momentum toward district play later this week with a 6-3 victory in St. Joseph on Monday afternoon against the Benton Cardinals. Trenton won 4 of 6 singles matches and 2 of the 3 doubles matches played, although the duel, as a whole, could be described as “competitive”, with zero 8-love sweeps in the entire afternoon.
Winning for THS in singles play were #2 entry Astrid Soriano, 8-5 over Madeline Burright, and, in another 8-5 final, #5 Harley Hall over Danielle Baig. At #4 singles, Lydia Leininger beat Kendall Buntin 8-2, while Jillian Voorhies won her #6 singles match in decisive fashion, 8-1 over Viviona Woodson.
Benton’s singles triumphs came from Kally Horn at #1 singles, 8-4 over Trenton’s Mallory Sole, with Benton’s Natalie Johnston winning at #3 singles over Alaina Overton of THS 8-5.
In doubles, Trenton’s #1 team of Sole and Overton struggled in an 8-2 loss to Horn and Johnston of the Lady Cardinals. However, the Lady Bulldogs picked up victories in the remaining two matches, with #2 team Soriano and Leininger grabbing an 8-4 win (over Burright and Baig), with Hall and Voorhies, at #3 doubles, winning 8-4 over Allen and Boyer.
Trenton’s tennis team heads right back to St. Joseph on Tuesday afternoon, playing the “North Side” school, Lafayette, in a 4 o’clock matchup.
