The Kansas City Chiefs made Felix Anudike-Uzomah one of their first-round picks in the 2023 NFL draft, a move that was highly praised by the hometown crowd. However, being a first-round selection comes with added pressure and expectations compared to his teammates in training camp.

Anudike-Uzomah addressed reporters after a rain-shortened practice session, acknowledging that he is still in the learning process when it comes to defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s system.

Despite being accountable for his progress at training camp, Anudike-Uzomah recognizes the significant differences between college football and the NFL. He mentioned that the competition in the NFL is on another level, with everyone being the best of the best. He also highlighted the technical and strategic adjustments required in transitioning from his college team, Kansas State, to the professional ranks with the Chiefs.

In practice, Anudike-Uzomah is primarily working with the second and third-team groups as he tries to find his rhythm and adapt to the Chiefs’ defensive scheme in St. Joseph.

In a related story from the offensive side of the ball, the Chiefs are determined to shield their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, following the departure of both their starting tackles in free agency.

Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. dealt a significant blow to the team after a trade with the Ravens failed to result in a long-term deal. Meanwhile, right tackle Andrew Wylie, who had become a reliable player along the offensive line, also left the team.

In response, General Manager Brett Veach acted quickly, signing former Tampa Bay tackle Donovan Smith to handle the left side and former Jacksonville tackle Jawaan Taylor to handle the right.

Additionally, the team utilized a third-round pick to bring in Oklahoma’s Wanya Morris, creating healthy competition at both tackle positions.

The Chiefs have a track record of developing relatively unheralded players, a reputation bolstered by assistant coach Andy Heck, considered one of the best in the business. The team’s interior offensive line also boasts strength with left guard Joe Thuney and right guard Trey Smith, both considered top-tier players in the league. Center Creed Humphrey’s impressive performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection in just his second season.

Despite previous concerns regarding the performance of the new offensive tackles, the Chiefs remain optimistic that they can tap into their potential and safeguard Patrick Mahomes effectively. Mahomes, known for his exceptional leadership and accountability, is expected to play a vital role in guiding the team to success.

On the injury front, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire returned to practice after a bout of illness. However, TE Jody Fortson, WR Kadarius Toney, and DE Mike Danna remained sidelined due to various injuries. Notably, defensive tackle Chris Jones continued his holdout, incurring fines of $50,000 for each day missed, totaling $550,000 so far.

The Chiefs recently concluded a short practice session, having held three consecutive workouts in pads. They will have a day off on Tuesday before resuming camp on Wednesday.
