The Princeton Tigers picked up an early-season statement win on Saturday night, riding 35 points from Preston Thomas to a 71-69 win over Platte Valley in the championship game of the Albany Tournament. Platte Valley, the cooperative team involving Jefferson and South Nodaway, is a very strong squad, with Jefferson, in its last year as a singular basketball program, winning the Class 1 state title in March. Colton Estes had 14 points and Austin Kelly 11 for Princeton. Platte Valley’s big front-line was tough for the Tigers to slow down in the game, with Chase Farnan connecting for 25 points and Clayton Merrigan 20 for the Eagles. Gabriel Nothstine added 10. The game was broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
The Worth County Lady Tigers won the Albany Tournament in low-scoring fashion, knocking off Platte Valley 39-25, while the Pattonsburg boys took third place over Worth County 60-50.
