The Princeton Tigers and Trenton Bulldogs locked horns on Tuesday night, part of eight girls/boys basketball doubleheaders to open up the 2018-2019 Grand River Conference basketball season, with the games from PHS broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.

In Tuesday night’s opener, the two-time defending GRC champion Trenton Lady Bulldogs used a suffocating defense to win at Princeton, 52-21.  Trenton led 14-9 after one quarter, but locked in defensively over the final 24 minutes, holding the Lady Tigers to one basket in the second quarter, six points in the third, and two baskets in the fourth quarter.

In improving to 7-0, Trenton sophomore Maci Moore had a game-high 20 points for her team, with senior guard Ainsley Tolson adding 13.  Princeton, now 3-3, had six points each from Lindsey Batson and Payton Goodin.

The Princeton boys battled in a close, hard-fought first quarter with Trenton, with the Bulldogs leading 12-11 after one quarter.  In perhaps the decisive moments of the game, over the last four minutes of the half, Princeton reserve guard Owen Schreffler got hot from three-point land, hitting five shots from distance, surging Princeton to a 31-21 halftime lead.  Despite a series of Trenton surges in the second half, the Tigers held the lead for the entire final two quarters, opening GRC play with a 62-46 victory.

Senior guard Logan Dunkin led Princeton with 17 points, including a perfect eight-of-eight from the free throw line to help put away Trenton in the fourth quarter.  Schreffler had 15 points (all in the second quarter), with Cameron Jones adding 12 and Colton Estes 10 for PHS.

Trenton, in falling to 3-4 on the season, had 16 points from Carson Radcliff and 12 from Dylan Harris.  Junior guard Jaren Whitney missed his second straight game with an ankle sprain, suffered in a win at Marceline on Tuesday, December 4th.

Trenton will host South Harrison in doubleheader action on Friday night (101.7 FM KGOZ), while Princeton will travel to Gallatin on Friday night to take on the Bulldogs, with coverage on KTTN FM 92.3.
