Persistent rain kept the Trenton High School softball team, 21 young women strong, inside on Monday morning, with Head Coach John Cowling and new Assistant Kameron Cool conducting practice in the Trenton Middle School gymnasium.

Despite the challenge presented by Mother Nature, Coach Cowling says the morning was a good one for the team:

The Lady Bulldogs enter their first season as a member of the Grand River Conference as the “team to beat” in the GRC East. The opportunity to battle for a conference title in 2016, something Trenton’s softball program has never had the chance to achieve, is not lost on Coach Cowling:

Trenton, after reaching the Class 2 state playoffs in October 2015, was bounced out of the Round of 16, losing to eventual state champion Lathrop. As it pertains to the 2016 “on-the-field” product, the returning talent base is strong, but the Lady Bulldogs graduated ace pitcher Daryian Otto off of last year’s team. The expectation of sophomore Ainsley Tolson, last year’s starting shortstop, moving to the pitching rubber this fall, will create openings for playing time in the infield for THS:

Trenton will host a softball jamboree on Monday afternoon, August 15th. The Lady Bulldogs jump immediately into conference play the following week, traveling to Maysville on Tuesday, August 23rd, and hosting the Princeton Tigers on Thursday, August 25th.
