The Trenton Lady Bulldogs joined seven other schools in participating in the Cameron Tournament on Wednesday, with Coach Tammy Ockenfels of the Lady Bulldogs telling KTTNSports.com that “all of her girls played well and moved better on the court.”. Coach Ockenfels expressed pride in the fourth place performance of Emma Gilham and Lexi Gott in doubles competition.
Gilham and Gott started strong, with an 8-3 win over Savannah, followed by an 8-5 quarterfinal victory over a team from Warrensburg. In the semifinals, the Trenton tandem was bumped off the championship hunt by Platte County in an 8-6 final, with a Warrensburg team beating Gilham and Gott for third place, 8-6.
The THS doubles team of Kendall Crowley and Morgan Dolan finished 0-2, with an 8-2 defeat against Savannah, and a 9-8 (7-2 tiebreak) defeat against Maryville.
In singles play, Elle Neal was 1-2 for THS, with an 8-2 loss against Lafayette, followed by an 8-4 win over Higginsville. Against a Maryville foe, Neal lost in the consolation round 8-5, ending her day.
Latorrie Johnson, playing in singles for the Lady Bulldogs, lost 8-love to Platte County and 8-1 opposite Higginsville.
On Thursday, the Lady Bulldog tennis team traveled to Kirksville, and despite a highly competitive and close dual, lost to the host Lady Tigers 7-2.
Trenton’s victories were achieved by #5 singles Lexi Gott (over Hannah Steele) 8-2, and the #2 doubles entry of Neal and Johnson, 8-6 over VanLooingham and Mouth.
For KHS, Christine Kuttenkuler beat Emma Gilham 9-7, Olivia Halma was an 8-6 winner over Elle Neal, Vanessa VanLaningham downed Kendall Crowley, 8-3, Noelle Mputu was an 8-2 victor over Lattorie Johnson, and Annaliese Novinger downed Morgan Dolan 8-4.
Tiger doubles wins were from Kuttenkuler and Halma (8-4 over Gilham and Gott) and Steele and Novinger, an 8-5 winner over Crowley and Dolan.
Kirksville won the JV tennis competition on Thursday afternoon over Trenton, 5-4. Bulldog winners were Baley Catron (singles / 6-2) and the doubles teams of Baley Catron and Trinity Gaunt (8-1), Harley Hall and Kaylor Farris (8-1) and Leslie Cotiangco and Harley Hall (8-1).
