The Trenton Bulldogs bowed out of the Chillicothe Tournament on Thursday afternoon, falling to the #1 seeded Chillicothe Hornets in quarterfinal round action at Shaffer Park 12-2, before traveling up to Danner Park, where the Bulldogs were beaten by the Macon Tigers, 12-1.
The losses drop the Bulldogs season record to 8-10. Â Despite the setbacks, Trenton coach Andy Hight highlighted the continued improvement of the Bulldog team, as against Chillicothe, THS trailed by a respectable 5-2 margin going into the bottom of the 5th, when the Hornets “ran away” from their rivals to the north, with four runs in the 5th inning and three more in the 6th, ending the game via run rule.
Colton Colston led the Trenton offense with two RBI’s and a double in three at-bats. Â Avery Cooksey had a double and scored a run, with Cade Darting adding the Bulldogs other base hit. Â In comparison to a 3-inning shutout loss to Chillicothe earlier this season, Trenton’s improvement was evident against the top-seed. Â
Drew Rorebeck went the first four innings for THS, giving up seven hits and five runs while striking out eight. Â The Bulldogs committed only one error in the contest. Â Sam Schilling pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on four hits.
The score in the consolation semifinal against Macon was very similar for the Bulldogs, as the Tigers won 12-1, however the road to the final score went very differently. Â Macon jumped on Trenton starter Colton Colston for 10 runs over the first three innings. Â While the Bulldogs managed six hits, THS only picked up a third-inning run to break the shutout. Â Jaren Whitney scored the run for THS.
Trenton will host the Milan Wildcats on Tuesday evening at 5 o’clock, with coverage of the baseball game from Burleigh Grimes Field on KTTN FM 92.3.
