The Trenton Bulldogs entered the top of the 4th inning in Tuesday afternoon’s game at Linn County High School (Purdin, MO) trailing 2-1, having given up an early 1-0 lead after the home team struck for 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Over the next three innings, the visitors from the Grand River Conference dominated, taking back the lead with 3 runs in the 4th inning, then “running away and hiding” with two more tallies in the 5th, and a four spot in the 6th, in a 10-3 win that improves THS to 6-7 in its first-ever baseball season.
Avery Cooksey and Drew Rorebeck had huge days for the Bulldogs, with Cooksey cracking two doubles and driving in four runs, part of a 3-for-4, three run game. Rorebeck was 4-for-4 (all singles), with 1 RBI and a run scored. Sam Schilling scored three times, with lead-off hitter Hunter Dugan was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Bulldogs showed continued improvement in making consistent offensively, and cutting down on errors defensively. Both Trenton and Linn County made just two errors, while the Bulldogs struck out only four times in seven innings against the Mustangs pitching staff of Waltz, Ward, and Davis.
Colton Colston pitched the first three innings for Trenton, giving up two runs (both unearned from the 3rd inning), with four strikeouts. Trenton’s 4th inning rally gave Colston the win. Spencer Harris pitched the middle 3 2/3 innings, with two hits, 1 run allowed, three walks, and five punch-outs. Sam Schilling got the final out on a 7th inning strikeout after walking one batter for the Bulldogs. Linn County was held to just four hits in the loss.
Trenton will next be in action on Saturday in the Mid-Buchanan Tournament, playing the Blue Jays of Northeast Nodaway High School in an 11 o’clock semifinal in Faucett, Missouri. State-ranked Mid-Buchanan plays North Andrew in the first semifinal at 9 o’clock. The third place game is at 1 o’clock, followed by the championship game at 3 on Saturday afternoon.
