The Texas A&M basketball program has been placed on two years probation due to several NCAA rules violations, with head coach Buzz Williams suspended for two games. Violations uncovered by the NCAA included Williams having un-allowed contact with a potential recruit in July 2019, with an unnamed assistant coach observing and holding tryouts with prospects during an unofficial visit last year, a not allowed action because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That assistant received a suspension from the university from June 2020 through the entire 2020-2021 season.
Other penalties incurred by the university include a reduction in the number of official visits by five for the upcoming school year. Unofficial visits will also be suspended for the Aggies first three SEC games this season.
Coach Williams came to Texas A&M three years ago after resigning from Virginia Tech. The transition found turbulence last year, with the Aggies going just 2-8 in SEC play, forced to cancel multiple games due to issues with the coronavirus.
