Stanberry wins “Battle of Bulldogs”, ending Gallatin’s basketball season in District 16 semifinals

The Grand River Conference Western Division champion Stanberry Lady Bulldogs beat the GRC’s Eastern Division runner-up Gallatin Lady Bulldogs, 51-49 on Wednesday night, in the semifinals of Class 2, District 16 at Mid-Buchanan High School in Faucett.

Madi Sager led Stanberry with 13 points, while Kalie Peterson had 11, Peyton Gage 10, and Lily Osborn eight points.  Gallatin, in its final game of the 2016-2017 season, had a game-high 19 point effort from sophomore Karley Salmon, while Cora Stout and Hayley Michael both added 10.

The win sends Stanberry into the district championship game, Friday night at 6 o’clock, to duel with the Mid-Buchanan Lady Dragons.  The #1 seed and host school for the tournament walloped KCI rival Plattsburg in Wednesday’s first girls semifinal, 62-36.

The boys semifinals are tonight (Thursday night) from Mid-Buchanan, as the #1 seeded Stanberry Bulldogs take on Plattsburg at 5:30, followed by the Mid-Buchanan Dragons entertaining the Maysville Wolverines at 7 o’clock.  The boys championship game is set for Saturday afternoon at 1.
