Barring a Trenton Lady Bulldog collapse over the next 24 hours, the Grand River Conference’s girls championship game is looking to be a rematch between the Stanberry Lady Bulldogs and Trenton, with, for this season, Stanberry owning home-court advantage. Both teams are ripping their way through their regular season schedules with only one loss apiece, with Stanberry matching Trenton’s Saturday night championship at the Hamilton Tournament by winning the King City Tournament in convincing fashion, 57-38 over North Andrew.
Tonight, Trenton hosts Polo, with a Lady Bulldog win clinching the GRC East for THS, and setting up a winner-take-all game on Friday night at Stanberry for the GRC title. Should Polo swing an upset at Trenton, the Lady Bulldogs still would get an opportunity to clinch the East title with a Tuesday night victory over Putnam County.
The GRC boys championship game will feature two of a possible four teams. In the GRC Western Division, the title is coming down to the winner of Tuesday night’s Top 10 showdown, with St. Joseph Christian hosting unbeaten, #1 ranked North Andrew. The Cardinals will head to St. Joseph with strong momentum, coming off of a King City Tournament championship, taking the crown on Saturday night over South Holt, 73-49. The Christian/North Andrew survivor will host either Milan or Trenton in the GRC boys title game on Friday night. Milan can clinch the GRC East title on Tuesday night with a win over Gallatin. The only way Trenton could snatch the crown away from the Wildcats is to beat Polo (Monday night) and Putnam County (Tuesday night) at the THS gym, combined with a Gallatin win over Milan on Tuesday night.
Milan’s boys are ranked #7 in the state in Class 2, with the St. Joseph Christian boys ranked #7, and North Andrew #1, both in Class 1.
The Stanberry boys won third place in the King City Tournament on Saturday afternoon, 65-48 over the King City Wildkats.
On Friday night, King City’s girls won third place over DeKalb 51-28, with the Maysville Lady Wolverines taking consolation over Albany, 42-40, while the Maysville boys won consolation over Stewartsville, 58-23.
The Class 2 state-ranked boys and girls teams from Mid-Buchanan High School won “double titles” in the North Platte Tournament, with the Lady Dragons hammering Jefferson 73-32 and the Dragon boys downing Plattsburg 61-47 on Saturday afternoon. The Jefferson boys won third place over Polo, 63-38. Â
On Friday night, the Mound City girls won third place over Northland Christian 49-38, with the Plattsburg Lady Tigers taking the consolation final over North Platte, 57-50, while the North Platte boys won consolation over Mound City, 34-33.
