The Trenton Lady Bulldogs, coming off a hard-fought, well played extra inning loss on Monday afternoon against Penney, traveled to Bethany on Tuesday night, playing South Harrison in a Grand River Conference softball contest, broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.
Trenton’s hitting woes continued into the road contest, as the Lady Bulldogs managed only two hits in three scoreless innings, with starting pitcher Emma Roberts keeping the game scoreless by retiring South Harrison through a pair of innings, giving up only a lead-off walk in the first inning to Jillian Hurt and a one-hit single in the second inning to Kaliska Madison.
The struggles for Trenton hit in the bottom of the third inning, with South Harrison’s offense batting around, scoring five runs to grab the lead. Hurt hit a hit sinking liner to center field that was missed on a shoe-string attempt and rolled into the deep outfield, with Hurt circling the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run. Madison, later in the inning, smacked a two-run triple to score Brooklyn Russell and Madi Nichols. Madison scored on a wild pitch. Â
Trenton’s comeback hopes took another blast in the South Harrison fourth inning, with a two-run double by Jillian Hurt followed two batters later by an RBI groundout by Russell, scoring Hurt for an 8-0 lead.
South Harrison freshman Hannah Carter shutout Trenton over five innings of work, giving up only three hits. Madi Nichols pitched the final two innings for the Lady Bulldogs, giving up, in the sixth inning, an infield single to Gracyn Rongey and a two-run home run to Maci Moore, her second of the season. South Harrison completed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Josie Hurt scoring on a single by Russell, and Jillian Hurt scoring her third run of the game on a steal of home, coming in to score as Maci Moore threw out Russell at second base.
The win improves South Harrison to 3-2, both overall and in GRC play. Trenton drops to 1-5 overall, and 1-3 in GRC play.
Trenton’s next game, at home Thursday night against Polo (5:30 PM) will be broadcast live on KTTN FM 92.3.
