New York’s Luke Voit gave the Yankees a 1st inning lead with a two-run single, as the visitors from the Big Apple defeated the Kansas City Royals on a sweltering Wednesday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, 5-2. For the third consecutive game, heat index readings started in the triple digits, with both starters failing to go the required five innings to earn a victory.
Brady Singer, added to the Royals active roster off the 10-day injured list before the game, dropped to 3-8, giving up five runs on 10 hits over just 3 2/3 innings.
For Kansas City’s offense, Whit Merrifield, after stealing his 33rd base of the season in the first inning, later scored on a ground ball by Salvador Perez. In the fifth inning, the Royals chopped into the Yankees lead, as Cam Gallagher scored on a grounder by Nicky Lopez.
Lucas Luetge started for New York, going just two innings, allowing one run and two hits. Chad Green earned the victory in relief, improving to 6-5.
In response to moving Singer to the roster, the Royals optioned right-handed reliever Joel Payamps to Triple-A Omaha.
