Greg Sankey, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), has agreed to a contract extension through 2028. The financial terms of the contract extension were not disclosed.
At the time of the announcement, Sankey had been serving as the SEC’s commissioner for nine years since 2015. During his tenure, he played a key role in expanding the College Football Playoff from four to 12 teams as the co-chair of the NCAA Transformation Committee. Additionally, the SEC announced the expansion of the conference to include Texas and Oklahoma on July 1, 2024. The conference also finalized a 10-year broadcast rights agreement with ABC/ESPN for football and basketball.
Stuart Bell, the president of the University of Alabama and the new SEC President at the time, praised Sankey for his contributions in advancing the conference on a national level. Bell stated that officials throughout the SEC held Sankey in high regard.
During Sankey’s tenure, SEC schools achieved significant success, winning a total of eight national titles in the previous season. Georgia repeated as the College Football Playoff champion, while LSU secured titles in women’s basketball and baseball. In total, the SEC has won 48 national titles under Sankey’s leadership.
