Salvador Perez’s game-ending single in the 10th inning secured a 4-3 victory for the Kansas City Royals against the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to five games.
The winning play came after Garrett Hampson, who replaced Vinnie Pasquantino as the automatic runner in the 10th, crossed home plate on Perez’s single against Wander Suero (0-1).
James McArthur (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the Royals to earn the win.
Perez and Nelson Velázquez both contributed two hits for the Royals, with Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia driving in a run each.
Royals starter Cole Ragans received support from the bullpen, as Nick Anderson, Chris Stratton, John Schreiber, and McArthur combined for five scoreless innings of relief.
Astros’ Yordan Alvarez had four hits and two RBIs, while Jeremy Peña added two hits and scored a run.
Houston loaded the bases in the first inning but managed only one run. Despite 10 hits surrendered by Ragans over five innings, the Astros left 13 runners on base and went 5 for 18 with runners in scoring position.
Astros’ Cristian Javier allowed three runs, two earned, in 5 1/3 innings.
In transactions, the Astros placed LHP Framber Valdez on the 10-day injured list and recalled Wander Suero from Triple-A Sugar Land. The Royals acquired RHP Colin Selby from Pittsburgh and signed RHP Zach Davies to a minor league deal.
The Astros and Royals will meet again on Wednesday, with RHP Spencer Arrighetti making his major league debut for Houston against Seth Lugo (1-0, 0.71 ERA).
