Derek Carr experienced a significant change as he donned his uniform for his preseason debut with the New Orleans Saints, trading the Raiders’ iconic silver and black for the Saints’ black and gold. Carr expressed his sense of renewal and comfort in his new attire, remarking that the transition felt right and invigorating.

Carr’s debut included a touchdown pass on his opening series, contributing to the Saints’ 26-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in the opening exhibition game for both teams. Despite Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes making an appearance but seeing limited action, the Chiefs fell short in their performance.

Carr’s presence was notable as he comfortably executed plays in his new offensive scheme, completing six of eight passes for 70 yards during his single drive. He orchestrated a 12-play, 80-yard drive, concluding it with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Keith Kirkwood.

Jameis Winston took over for Carr and continued to build on the Saints’ lead, driving the team 48 yards and delivering a 29-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver A.T. Perry. Perry showcased his skills as the Saints’ leading receiver, tallying six catches for 70 yards.

As the game progressed with backup players, the Chiefs displayed resilience. Third-string quarterback Shane Buechele made an impact, throwing for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Despite their efforts, the Chiefs fell short, and the Saints secured victory when rookie kicker Blake Grupe kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired.

The game showcased standout defensive plays as well, with both teams recording sacks and interceptions. The Chiefs’ defense managed three sacks, while the Saints’ defenders, including linebackers Zach Baun and Ty Summers, also made significant contributions.

In terms of injuries, RB Kendre Miller of the Saints sustained a sprained knee, potentially impacting his role during Alvin Kamara’s three-game suspension at the start of the season. On the Chiefs’ side, reserve cornerback Nic Jones suffered a fractured hand, and fellow reserve defensive back Anthony Witherstone dealt with a toe injury.

Looking ahead, the Chiefs are set to face the Arizona Cardinals next, while the Saints will take on the Los Angeles Chargers in their upcoming preseason matchups.
