Johnny Russell scored in the 81st minute of regulation time for the only goal of the game, giving host Sporting Kansas City a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
The victory gives Kansas City six points early in the Major League Soccer season, with a mark of 2-3-0, while Salt Lake, with a record of 3-1-1, lost for the first time this season and sits at a still solid 10 points in Western Conference play.
Sporting had five shots on goal, with four of those shots saved by RSL goalkeeper Zac MacMath. This weekend, both teams are back in action, with SKC traveling to Vancouver, British Columbia to play the Whitecaps, while Real Salt Lake is in suburban Denver to play the rival Colorado Rapids.
