Royals’ Lugo finishes second in AL Cy Young balloting

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal has been named the Cy Young Award winner in the American League, claiming all 30 first-place votes in taking the 2024 honor.  Skubal had 210 points in voting to runner-up Seth Lugo of the Kansas City Royals, with a total of 93 points. 

Lugo, in his first year with Kansas City, was 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA in 33 starts, with a career-high 206 2/3 innings pitched, while making his first All-Star Game.  In the Cy Young voting, Lugo had 14 second-place vote and nine third-place votes.  He tied for 2nd in the American League with 22 quality starts.

Kansas City has three winners of American League Cy Young Awards, with Bret Saberhagen winning twice, David Cone winning the honor, and Zack Greinke taking the crown in 2009.
