Royals general manager J.J. Picollo expects a similar budget to last year, around $117 million, to address the team’s needs after reaching the American League Division Series.
Picollo identified two key areas to improve: finding a leadoff hitter who can get on base and adding middle-of-the-order power.
The Royals’ offseason shopping list is shorter than previous years, but Picollo acknowledges that refining the team can be just as challenging.
“We’re looking for quality over quantity,” Picollo said.
Last year, the Royals were major spenders in free agency, signing pitcher Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha. Lugo will return, but Wacha has an opt-out clause.
“We’d like to have him back,” Picollo said. “He enjoyed being in Kansas City, but he pitched well and will have other opportunities.”
The Royals’ payroll is significantly lower than teams like the Mets and Yankees, but Picollo said they must work within their means.
Manager Matt Quatraro expects his coaching staff to return, with no changes in responsibilities.
