The Kansas City Royals lost an early 4-0 lead as the Miami Marlins, led by MLB’s leading hitter, Luis Arraez, downed the Royals 9-6 on Monday night.
Kansas City started fast, with a pair of RBI hits by MJ Melendez and Salvador Perez giving the Royals a 2-0 first inning lead. That advantage doubled in the third on a solo homer by Nick Pratto and an RBI single by Melendez.
Miami’s rally started in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and by the end of a four-run fourth, the Marlins had a 6-4 lead. Relief pitcher Mike Mayers gave up five straight hits with two outs, including a two-run triple from Jon Berti, an RBI double by Jonathan Davis, and a run-scoring hit from Arraez. A Bryan De La Cruz two-run homer in the sixth made the score 9-4.
Drew Waters had an RBI single by Drew Waters in the ninth to cut the lead to 9-6. A double play grounder by Bobby Witt Jr. ended the game.
In Arlington, Texas, the AL West-leading Rangers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3. Nathaniel Lowe’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Marcus Semien with the game-winning run.
