The Kansas City Royals started the month of September knowing that they need to make a significant move up the standings to gain the American League’s wild card spot, and getting back to the playoffs for the first time since winning the World Series in 2015.
A whirlwind few hours of activity for the Royals started with the release of veteran right-hander Neftali Feliz, and the claiming of right-hander Sam Gaviglio off outright waivers from the Seattle Mariners. Gaviglio is expected to join his new team in Minneapolis on Saturday, where the Royals beat the Minnesota Twins on Friday night, 7-6.
Coming off the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder soreness is Trevor Cahill, and recalled from the minor leagues to join the major league team are right-hander Andres Machado (#59), catcher Cam Gallagher, infielder Raul Mondesi, and outfielders Terrance Gore and Paulo Orlando. To make room for Machado on the 40-man roster, the club transferred left-hander Brian Flynn (left groin strain) to the 60-day disabled list.
The Royals continue their critical series in the Twin Cities on Saturday night, playing the Twins at 6:10 on KTTN AM 1600 and KTTN FM 92.3 Sunday’s final game of the series will be a 1:10 first pitch from Target Field. Minnesota currently owns the second wild card spot in the American League, leading the Royals by 3 1/2 games. The two teams will play a four-game series at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City next weekend (September 7th-10th).
