The Kansas City Royals, following a challenging 106-loss season, are actively addressing their pitching needs. On Tuesday, the team finalized a significant three-year, $45 million deal with right-hander Seth Lugo to bolster their starting rotation. Lugo, known for his exceptional curveball, delivered a strong performance with the Padres last season, going 8-7 with a 3.57 ERA as a full-time starter. The 34-year-old declined a $7.5 million player option with the Padres, opting for free agency. Lugo’s contract includes an opt-out option after the 2025 season.
In addition to strengthening the starting rotation, the Royals secured reliever Chris Stratton on a $4 million deal. The 33-year-old, a recent World Series winner with the Texas Rangers, posted a 3.92 ERA in 64 games with the Cardinals and Rangers last season. The deal includes a $3.5 million salary for the upcoming season, with a player option of $4.5 million for 2025, along with a $500,000 buyout.
General Manager J.J. Picollo emphasized the team’s focus on building a cohesive unit with experienced players in the clubhouse, stating, “We’re trying to put a team together. It’s not really one individual talent.” The Royals have also signed reliever Will Smith to a $5 million deal, further adding to their experienced bullpen.
The pitching overhaul extends beyond Lugo and Stratton, with previous acquisitions like Cole Ragans and Nick Anderson aimed at addressing both rotation and bullpen needs. The Royals have been expressing optimism about fortifying their pitching staff and improving their performance in the upcoming season.
