On Monday night, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs hosted Lawson on Monday night in a classic pitcher’s duel. Pitching dominated early, as neither team could do anything offensively in the first two innings. Lawson collected the only hit. The visitors from the KCI were able to push across a run in the top of the third inning with an RBI double.
Trailing for the first time all year, the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the third. Jayden Roeder led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a single by Tenna Roberts and scored on a sacrifice fly to short right field by Jaylen Neff to tie the game, 1-1.
Trenton starter Ainsley Tolson continued her trend of pitching her best both under pressure, and in late innings, slamming the door on Lawson until the THS offense awoke. Tolson allowed only 1 walk while no-hitting LHS over the final four innings. With the game tied at 1 in the bottom of the 6th, Tolson reached on a Lawson error and stole second base. With one out and a 1-2 count, Whitley Richman launched her first home run of the season to give the home team a 3-1 lead.
Tolson shut down Lawson in the 7th, as Trenton won for the 12th time in as many attempts this season. Trenton scored their 3 runs on only 5 hits, two by Roberts and one each by Whitley Richman, Taylor Richman and Jayden Roeder. Tolson continued her dominance this season, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out 14 to run her record to 10-0.
Trenton Head Coach John Cowling, in postgame, commented, “I give a lot of credit to Lawson’s pitcher, she held our offense in check all night. Jayden had a great hustle play to score our first run and then Whitley came through in a big spot to put us ahead. Ainsley continues to make it very difficult for other teams to score. This was a good test for our team tonight.”
The THS JV won a tight game Monday night against the Lawson Lady Cardinals, 2-0.
Both teams had runners on in the first and second innings, but were unable to plate them. However in the third inning, with runners on second and third, Trenton broke through with a Lexi Whitaker single that scored both Kendall Crowley and Kennedy Norton. It was all the offense the Bulldogs would need, as THS would only allow one more Cardinal to reach base the final three innings of the game and she was promptly picked off at first by sophomore catcher Sidney Lynch.
JV Coach Kameron Cool commented, “Our pitchers both did a great job. They made it very difficult for Lawson to get comfortable at the plate tonight.”
