Pablo Reyes delivered a walkoff grand slam in the ninth inning, securing his third hit of the game, as the Boston Red Sox managed to recover after squandering a two-run lead to defeat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Monday night.
Reyes, who expressed his elation after the game, stated, “You can’t put these feelings into words. When you see the fans on their feet, and playing in this ballpark. Words can’t explain it.”
This victory marked only the second win for the Red Sox in nine games, following a recent sweep by the Toronto Blue Jays. Notably, the Red Sox remain undefeated in their yellow “City Connect” uniforms, boasting a 7-0 record this season and an impressive 22-4 record overall.
The winning run was scored in the ninth inning against Carlos Hernández of the Royals. Reyes, with bases loaded, opted to swing away instead of bunting and hit a line drive off the Fisk foul pole for a grand slam, sending the crowd into a frenzy. This marked Reyes’ first home run in 103 at-bats since September of 2021.
The game also featured notable performances by starting pitchers. Royals starter Cole Ragans struck out a career-high 11 batters, allowing only one earned run and four hits. On the Red Sox side, starter Brayan Bello took a shutout into the seventh inning and was replaced by Josh Winckowski, who gave up two runs to the Royals to tie the game.
The Red Sox are anticipating the return of SS Trevor Story and LHP Chris Sale in the coming days, providing a boost to the team’s roster. With this victory, the Red Sox hope to build momentum as they continue their quest for a playoff spot.
