Catcher Jonah Heim ended Tuesday night’s game at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas with a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning against Scott Barlow, as the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5.
The Royals had rallied in the late innings to a 5-4 lead, with single runs in the 8th and 9th innings followed by a single tally in the top of the 10th, with Michael Massey’s sacrifice fly giving the visitors a brief advantage.
Starting pitcher Jacob deGrom had nine strikeouts for Texas, and was positioned for the victory until the Ranger bullpen lost the lead late. The former New York Mets threw 98 pitches (68 for strikes) over seven innings of work, leaving with a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Adolis Garcia tied the game at 4 with an RBI single, followed by a two-out walk to Josh Jung and Heim’s 403 foot blast into the right field bleachers.
In Denver, Nolan Gorman had a home run in a three-run 9th inning for the Cardinals, in a 9-6 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI single and Tyler O’Neill a run-scoring hit in the 9th, giving St. Louis valuable breathing room and the final advantage.
Colorado sent the tying run to the plate with no outs in the home 9th, but Ryan Helsley slammed the door for the save. Tommy Edman and Juan Yepez also homered for the Cardinals, as St. Louis rallied from a 6-2 deficit after six innings. Elias Diaz, C.J. Cron, and Ryan McMahon homered for Colorado in the defeat.
