Putnam County senior right-hander Claire Tipton threw a three-hit shutout against visiting Trenton on Wednesday night, with the Lady Midgets beating their GRC foe 4-0, in action heard on KTTN FM 92.3.
The Lady Midgets, in improving to 21-10 on the season, jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, with Sam Daniels leading off the first inning with a single, followed by an RBI triple by Tipton. A Karlie Ingersoll double drove in Tipton, with a Jenna Knowles single leaving runners on second and third with no outs. Â
Trenton starter Emma Roberts did well to escape further damage, enducing a strikeout, popout, and groundout.
Putnam County again threatened in the fourth inning, with two walks and a single leaving the bases loaded for Tipton. In driving in her second and third runs of the game, Tipton hit a looping liner into left field just in front of charging Lady Bulldog defender Mirena King, scoring Allise Perkins and Avigail Harlan.
Down 4-0 in the top of the seventh, Trenton threatened, but despite a base on balls and a walk that brought the tying run into the on-neck circle, the Lady Bulldog season ended on a two-out, two-on strikeout. Trenton, in its first season under coach Madi Stillwell, finishes the year at 9-19.
Tipton struck out 14 Lady Bulldogs in the 7-inning gem. In the first game of the night at Unionville, the South Harrison Lady Bulldogs advanced with a 9-3 win over Penney.
Tuesday night’s games, due to wet field conditions, were moved to Trenton High School, with Marceline beating Brookfield 12-2, and, in 14 innings, Milan beating Gallatin 5-4.
