Putnam County girls, Carrollton boys win Class 2, District 7 track titles

Putnam County High School hosted the Class 2, District 7 track and field meet on Saturday, with the team titles taken by the host Lady Midgets with 123 points, and the boys from Carrollton, with 109 points.  The Marceline Lady Tigers finished third with 101 1/2 points (Schuyler County was 2nd).  The Brookfield Bulldogs, with 104 points, finished second in the boys team chase, followed by third-place Milan, with 96 points.

Top four finishers advance to this Saturday’s Class 2, Section 4 meet, needing one more “Top 4” finish to advance to next week’s Class 1 and 2 state track and field meet.

In the 100 meter dash, Hannah Meyers of Putnam County ran 13.22 seconds to win the title and earn 10 points for the Lady Midgets.  South Harrison’s Summer Beaty moved on with a 4th place finish, while Carrollton’s Mackenzie Brown was 2nd.  Brock Wood of South Shelby won the boys 100 at 11.6 seconds.  Milan’s Jesus Lopez moved on with a runner-up finish, with Brookfield’s Brandon Collins third, and Putnam County’s Carson Quint in 4th place.

Winning the 200 meter dash were Putnam County’s Meyers, at 27.41 seconds, and Sean Puffpaff of Carrollton, at 23.68.  Mackenzie Brown of Carrollton finished 2nd in the girls race, with Gabriel Hurley of Putnam County second, Jesus Lopez of Milan 3rd, and Khalil Walker of Brookfield moving onto sectionals in 4th place in the boys 200.

Winning the girls open 400, with a time of 1:00.99, was Marceline freshman Abbey Kussman.  Brookfield’s Lauren Rhodes was second, and Marceline’s Elaine Ewigman third.  Puffpaff of Carrollton won the boys 400, in 51.76 seconds.  In 2nd place, at 52.02 seconds, was Milan senior Mauricio Curiel.  Carrollton’s Justin Thoeni was third.

South Shelby sophomore Meredith O’Neal won the girls 800, in 2:36.98.  Putnam County’s Emmy Dar advanced by finishing 4th.  In the boys 800, Milan junior Daniel Anaya picked up a victory for the Wildcats, in 2:08.82.  Marceline’s Dylan Wheeler was 2nd and Milan’s Ryan Dabney 4th.

South Shelby’s O’Neal took the girls 1600 titles (5:56.22).  Milan sophomore Vanessa Stimpson and Marceline sophomore Maycee Edgar advanced with 3rd and 4th place finishes respectively.  Fayette’s Jack Kindle won the boys 1600 (5:00.51), followed by South Harrison’s Derek McClure, Milan’s Daniel Anaya, and Putnam County’s Jordan Mathes.

Brookfield senior Maryanne Matzen claimed the girls 3200 crown (12:56.48), with Maycee Edgar of Marceline 2nd, Brookfield’s Leslie Dean 3rd, and Carrollton’s Cierra Famuliner 4th.  In the 3200 boys race, Brookfield senior James Gunn took the title (10:59.08), with Gallatin’s Ayden Wayne 2nd and Milan’s Raul Fuentes 3rd.

In the hurdle sprints, Putnam County freshman Madison Simmons won the girls 100 (17.35 seconds).  Brookfield’s Sydney Wilbeck was 2nd and Putnam County’s Graycie Rhoades 4th.  In the boys 110 hurdles, Brookfield senior Bryce Howerton ran 17.25 for the win.  Putnam County’s Micah Heise was 3rd and Marceline’s Vincenzo Anthony 4th.

The girls 300 hurdles events was claimed by Putnam County’s Madison Simmons (48.9 seconds), with Brookfield’s Maryanne Matzen third.  Brock Wood of South Shelby (41.11) won the boys 300 hurdles.  Colten Fordyce of Milan ran 41.67 for 2nd, and Marceline’s Nicholas Cain was 3rd.

The 4 by 100 relays were won by the Fayette girls and the Putnam County (Torqe Brundage, Jacob Hartley, Gabriel Hurley, Carson Quint) boys.  The South Harrison and Brookfield girls finished 3rd and 4th to advance, with the Brookfield Bulldogs 2nd and South Harrison Bulldogs in 3rd in the boys race.

The Marceline Lady Tigers (Jaylea Bixenman, Elaine Ewigman, Makenzie Stahl, Abbey Kussman) won the girls 4 by 200 in a time of 1:52.01.  Putnam County was 2nd and Brookfield 4th.  The Carrollton Trojans won the boys 4 by 200 (Preston Cooper, Sean Puffpaff, Tyson Thomas, Justin Thoeni), running 1:34.24.  Milan (Curiel, Lopez, Shaw, Fordyce) was second, Putnam County 3rd, and Brookfield 4th.

The 4 by 400 girls winner was Marceline, with Kussman, Stahl, Bixenman, and Ewigman running 4:18.24.  Brookfield was 4th.  Carrollton won the boys 4 by 400 in 3:34.11, with Milan 2nd and Brookfield 3rd.

The 4 by 800 relays went to the South Shelby girls and Marceline boys, with the Marceline and Brookfield girls in the 3rd and 4th positions.  The Milan boys were 2nd, followed by Carrollton and Brookfield.

The high jump champions were Schuyler County’s Rachel Morris, and, with leap of 6 feet, 4 inches, Milan’s Mauricio Curiel.  Jaylea Bixenman of Marceline was 2nd, Rylee Sensenich of Brookfield 3rd, and Makenzie Brown of Carrollton 4th in the girls event, with Putnam County’s Carson Quint 2nd and Marceline’s Hayden Dorrell 4th in the boys high jump.

Jaylee Knowles of the Putnam County Lady Midgets, at 10 feet, won the girls pole vaults.  Marceline’s Lillian Wright was 3rd and Summer Beaty of South Harrison 4th.  Tanner Johnson of the Gallatin Bulldogs won the boys pole vault, at 13 feet, 6 inches, followed by Dylan Wheeler of Marceline, Tyson Thomas of Carrollton, and Hayden Dorrell of Marceline.

In the long jump, Jada Gaines of Fayette and Brock Wood of South Shelby won District 7 championships.  In the girls event, advancing to sectionals were Brookfield’s Sydney Wilbeck (2nd) and Putnam County’s Madison Simmons (3rd).  Boys moving on included Brookfield’s Blake Cavanaugh, in 2nd place.

Carrollton freshman Mackenzie Brown won the girls triple jump, at 33 feet, 9 1/2 inches, with Katelyn Salisbury of Putnam County in 4th place.  Scotland County senior Ryan Slaughter won the boys triple jump.  Brookfield’s Cavanaugh was third.

Shot put champions were Schuyler County senior Megan Haley and Putnam County senior Ryan Valentine, with a throw of 50 feet 5 3/4 inches.  Finishing in the #2 spot for the girls was South Harrison’s Keagan Madison.  Carrollton’s Hayden Kilson was the boys runner-up.

The discus was won by Schuyler County senior Summer Small (Carrollton’s Abigael Sullivan was 4th), while Putnam County’s Valentine won his second throwing event, at 159 feet, 10 inches.  South Harrison’s Wyatt Starmer was third and Carrollton’s Kilson 4th.

The javelin winners were Schuyler County’s Haley and Carrollton’s Owen Dobbins (158’6″).  Baylee Jobson of Marceline (2nd), Katheryn Ewing of Brookfield (3rd) and Racelyn Mathis of Carrollton (4th) moved to sectionals, along with Jeremy Wililams (2nd) of Brookfield.
