The Worth County Tigers beat Princeton in Grand River Conference crossover games on Tuesday night in Grant City. In a pair of high-scoring affairs, the host Lady Tigers beat Princeton 78-58 while the boys final was 75-56. The Princeton varsity teams, 0-1 to start the season, are off until Monday, when they play in the quarterfinals of the Albany Invitational Tournament. The Princeton girls, seeded #5, will battle King City at 7:45, while the 7th seeded Princeton boys take on perennial state power Jefferson at 6:15.
In their loss to Worth County, Jaelyn Steeby-Thomas led Princeton with 27 points, while Lindsey Batson added 11. The second and fourth quarters were the trouble spots for PHS, outscored by a combined 45-23 over those two frames. Anna Gladstone and Regan Allee both had 23 points for a vastly improved WCHS team. Jessi Badell had 12 and Kaylee McElvain 11 points.
The Princeton boys were paced by 12 points each from Blaine Millburn and Andrew Smith, while Riley Lewis contributed 11. For Worth County, Drake Kinsella had a game-high 20 points while Cade Allee added 13.
In addition to the games to start the Albany Tournament involving Princeton, other quarterfinals from Albany High School will be, on Monday, Jefferson girls vs. Albany at 4:45 PM and the South Harrison boys vs. King City at 9:15 PM.
On Tuesday night, quarterfinal action continues as South Harrison’s Lady Bulldogs, seeded #3, take on Worth County at 4:45, followed by the Worth County boys, a #3 seed, challenging Pattonsburg at 6:15. The Stanberry Lady Bulldogs lay Pattonsburg at 7:45, followed by the #1 seeded Stanberry boys against Albany at 9:15.
Consolation semifinals will be Wednesday, November 30th, with championship semifinals at Thursday, December 1st. The consolation finals and girls third place game will be the night of Friday, December 2nd, with three games, starting with the boys third place game at 5:30 PM, finishing the Albany Tournament on Saturday night, December 3rd.
