The Princeton Tigers and St. Joseph Christian Lions, two of the top small school boy’s basketball teams in the region, locked horns on Monday night in a showdown in the Grand River Conference West. Princeton, entering the game one game behind Christian in the league standings, emerged with a 72-69 victory.
The contest, heard on KGOZ FM 101.7, saw Talan Holt score a game-high 30 for the Tigers (16-3, 5-1), with Clay Evans adding 22. The result ties Princeton with St. Joseph Christian, with both programs now one game behind a Worth County team that remains unbeaten in GRCW competition.
St. Joseph Christian (15-3, 5-1) had Vail Frechting with 18 points, Cy Carlson 14, Johnston Stewart 13, and Nick Orsheln 10.
The Princeton girls, also coming into their road game one game behind Class 1, #9 ranked St. Joseph Christian, were in position to grab a victory, leading by one point after three quarters. However, SJC senior guard Chloe Burnham took over in the fourth quarter, leading the Lady Lions to a 53-42 triumph.
SJC (14-4, 6-0) was paced by Burnham’s 17 points, with Danika Wattenbarger 14, and Lexi McDaniel 11 points. Addi Henke paced the Lady Tigers attack with 14 points.
St. Joseph Christian will play North Platte, with Princeton hosting Stanberry, with both doubleheaders on Tuesday night.
