In state championship softball games played Saturday at the Killian Sports Complex in Springfield, Vienna edged Platte Valley 1-0 in Class 1.  Vienna scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning.  Both teams finished the season with a record of 22-4.  Platte Valley’s trip to state included a District 16 championship, followed by an 8-6 win over Princeton in the state sectionals at Lathrop.

Father Tolton Catholic won its first-ever state crown with a 4-1 win over Penney High School of Hamilton in the Class 2 state championship game.  The Trail Blazers scored all the runs they would need with a four-run fourth inning surge.  The Lady Hornets were only able to scrape a single run, coming in the top of the sixth.

Tolton pitcher Paige Bedsworth struck out 16 Penney batters.  In her final appearance in the Hamilton “Blue and Gold”, south-paw Julia Kanoy struck out 12 batters from the circle.

Father Tolton finishes the year at 24-3, with Penney at 18-9.
