The Penney High School Hornets (Hamilton, MO) picked up a 35-13 road win on Friday night at C.F. Russell Stadium in Trenton, securing the top seed for the Class 1, District 4 football tournament to be run through the month of November. Carter Kanoy had three touchdown runs, including the game’s first points in the first quarter, and the clinching score in the fourth quarter for the 5-4 Hornets. Trenton finishes the regular season with a record of 2-7, giving the Bulldogs a #6 seed in Class 2, District 8, and a road trip to Gower this Friday night to play the #3 seed East Buchanan Bulldogs.Â
The visitors from Hamilton opened the scoring on a 41 yard dash by Kanoy midway through the first quarter, giving the Hornets a 7-0 advantage:Â
A 10 yard touchdown run on an option pitch with 49 seconds remaining in the half gave Hamilton the 14-0 lead at the break, with PHS keeping the pressure on the Bulldogs in the third quarter, as a suffocating defense and steady running attack resulted in a 3-yard scoring run by Ford and a four-yard run by Kanoy leaving the Hornets up 28-0 with 12 minutes remaining.Â
The fourth quarter would provide to be more challenging for Hamilton, as the Bulldogs, on a touchdown strike from Mason Rongey to Aiden Weyer got on the board on the first fourth quarter play from scrimmage:Â
A fumble on Penney’s next running play gave the ball back to Trenton, but the Hornet defense stiffened, holding the lead at 21 points through the majority of the quarter, despite three lost fumbles from the Penney offense adding anxious moments to the Hamilton faithful.Â
A second Trenton score, on an 8 yard strike from Rongey to Skipper, cut the lead to 28-13, but a missed PAT slowed the Bulldogs momentum.
Kanoy ended all hopes of a Trenton rally with a 65 yard scamper with 1:56 to play:Â
Penney lost the turnover battle with the three fourth-quarter lost fumbles. Trenton’s Rongey threw an interception on the game’s final play. Penney had an unofficial total of 12 penalties for 110 yards. As a #1 seed in Class 1, District 4, Penney will have a bye this week, and host either Gallatin or Maysville in the quarterfinal round on Friday, November 8th at 7 o’clock.
