The Putnam County Midgets won a pair of single-digit contests at Princeton on Tuesday night, in a Grand River Conference doubleheader on KTTN FM 92.3.
In the opener, the Lady Midgets won for the first time in conference play, with clutch free throw shooting late, and a strong second half showing by center Emma Whitlock led Putnam County to a 54-53 upset of the Lady Tigers. The loss for Princeton was damaging for the team’s hopes of battling for the GRC East title, with the Lady Tigers now 3-2 in conference play and 9-7 overall. Â
Putnam County (7-9, 1-4) was paced by Allise Perkins with 13 points with Whitlock adding 12 points, 10 of those in the second half. Princeton sophomore guard Addy Henke scored a game-high 30 points, with Klaire Buckler adding 11.
The boys game was played with a similar story line to that of the girls, with the teams starting fast, but having offensive productivity slowed as the game progressed. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Midgets had claimed a key GRC victory, 54-49, improving to 3-2 in conference play.
Trace Riediger had 17 points for the Midgets, with Carter Simmons adding 14, and Brayden McReynolds 11 points. Â
Princeton, in falling to 2-3 in GRC Eastern Division play, had 15 points from Jaden Finney and 13 from Clay Evans.
